Campaign Launch - Jan 27th 2009
On January 27th 2009 at 12pm the “Vote at 16 – A New Age in Voting” campaign will be formally launched in front of the Dáil Éireann in Kildare Street, Dublin.
We believe that young people should have a greater say in decisions and actions that affect them and their community. It has been suggested by some in the media and many political commentators that low voter turn-out in elections and referenda is a result of a lack of interest in politics, particularly amongst young people. We do not agree, from our work we know that the vast majority of young people are interested in local, national and global issues. The key reason why so many do not engage is because they are disillusioned with politicians and political parties who ignore them and their issues.
It is time for Irish Government to welcome a new age in voting and allow 16 and 17 year olds to have their say in local and European elections.
